Smoking in Pregnancy

Now that you’re pregnant, quitting smoking has never been more important for both you and your baby. There is no safe level of smoking for anyone but if you continue to smoke while you are pregnant you’ll be putting your baby at serious risk of a premature delivery, at increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth or sudden infant death (also known as cot death).

In addition, smoking while you’re pregnant can increase the risk of all sorts of health problems for your baby as he/she grows:

  • wheezy coughs
  • problems with hyperactivity and attention
  • behavioural issues

The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone. The Redbridge Stop Smoking Service has a team of specialist stop smoking advisors who can help you make the change. You’ll receive friendly and non-judgmental support from a specialist stop smoking Practitioner who will have an understanding of the issues you may experience while quitting smoking.

Redbridge Stop Smoking Service can provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help support you with your quit attempts. NRT is:

  • Safer than continuing to smoke in pregnancy
  • Prescribed following a risk and benefit assessment
  • Doubles a person’s chance of quitting smoking
  • Delivers lower doses of nicotine than a cigarette
  • Curbs cravings and withdrawal symptoms
  • Stopping smoking in pregnancy is the best thing you can do for your baby.

Your Midwife will ask you about your smoking status at your first appointment and all smokers will automatically be referred for quit support. Pregnant smokers are encouraged to self-refer at any time during their pregnancy.
